The Federal Office for Transport grants a 25 year licence for aerial tramways. Afterwards, the tramway has to be comprehensively refurbished and newly approved. The operating licence for the Rothorn aerial tramway expires at the end of the 2014/15 winter season. In order for the tramway to be approved again, the engine, brakes and steering are being fully renovated and the supports are being assessed. At the same time, both cabins are being replaced by brand-new cabins. The stations and cables are not being altered. This means that the physical and technical aspects of the tramway will remain the same. So: The transport capacity, weights, dimensions, drive and hangers will stay the same.
The design for both of the new cabins is based on the design for the Urden lift. Water tanks are being newly integrated into the floor of the cabins. The entire water supply for the Rothorn mountain restaurant will be transported solely by the aerial tramway.
The renovation of the Rothorn aerial tramway will last approx. 7 weeks and cost around CHF 3 million. The renovation will commence as soon as the winter season is over, so that the tramway can be used at the end of June 2015 for the summer season and a further 25 years.
