After two successful IBU Junior Cups, an IBU Cup will be held in Lenzerheide from 7 to 10 December 2017 for the first time. At the IBU Cup, around 270 athletes from 30 nations are expected. It is the second highest international competition series, which is located directly under the World Cup. Interesting and exciting biathlon competitions on a high level will be offered this weekend. For biathlon fans and other sports enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the fascinating sport firsthand.
The biathlon competitions of the IBU Cup series can be compared with the European Cup at the Alpine FIS races. Depending on the nationality, 3 to 6 athletes per national federation can take part in the competitions. The IBU Cup athletes win qualification points for the IBU World Cup start. In addition to the junior athletes, there are World Cup athletes, who have not yet been able to get their performance in the season, and compete for the nomination in the World Cup.
That's why there’s usually an exchange between the IBU Cup and the World Cup, especially among the strongest nations with the most athletes. Each year, there are 8 IBU Cups and the highlight of the season with the Biathlon European Championships. The European Championship competitions are also part of the IBU Cup this season.
