The vivid mountain farmer and craftsmen village

In the old days the „Peister Meister“ (Masters of Peist) were world famous. The traces of the golden ages of the „Peister Meister“ are well visible when walking through the village. Still nowadays handicraft and agriculture determine the cycle of life. The rhythmic blow of the hammer and the singing sound of the saw can still be heard from the workshops. During the day the people of Peist are professional and hardworking, in the evening however, everyone meets for “Hengert” and enjoys telling local stories and legends to visitors.

PEISTER MEISTER

Craftsmen from Peist used to be very famous for their special skills and craftsmanship. It gave them the respectful nickname of „Peister Meister“ (Masters of Peist). The village had gunsmiths, dyers, accountants, bell solders, „schädler“, tailors, carpenters, cobblers and wagon builders. The following short portraits not only provide an insight into the individual works but also into the life of people who lived in the secluded Grisons village a long time ago.

Peister Alp

The ascent to Peister Alp will be richly rewarded! Lush mountain meadows, a fantastic panoramic view, cows and cattle Alps and award-winning Alpine cheese await you. The joyful Peister Alpine Festival with dancing, singing and conviviality takes place every two years. With the traditional alp-descent in September (the return of the cattle from the mountain back down into the valley) the mountain summer is given its appropriate goodbye.

Kirche Peist

1874 wütete in Peist ein grosses Feuer nebst vielen Häuser und Ställen wurde auch die Kirche zu Schutt und Asche. An den vielen Steinhäusern die nach dem Grossbrand gebaut wurden, sind die Auswirkungen der Katastrophe im Ortsbild sichtbar. 1876/1877 wurde die Kirche wieder hergestellt. Die reformierte Dorfkirche mit ihrem markanten Zwiebelturm steht unter Denkmalschutz. Im Innern findet sich eine kunstvoll gearbeitete Kasettendecke.

Besenbeizen & Stallmuseum

Im Stallmuseum «Uf Truaja» oberhalb von Peist bietet der Landwirt Hans Scherrer charmante Führungen an und in Silvanas Bäsabeiz und Evis Brunnastübli treffen sich Einheimische und Gäste gerne zum «henggern» auf einen gemütlichen Kafi.
